Revitalizing Lentekhi: Overcoming Isolation Through Sustainable Tourism

About the project

Local action.
Lasting value.

For a decade, Lentekhi faced significant geographic isolation following a major road collapse on the opposite side of the pass, triggered by severe climate events. Cut off from neighboring Svaneti, the region experienced a prolonged decline in tourism and economic activity, accompanied by population migration.

Following the full restoration of this vital transit route, a comprehensive, donor-supported initiative was launched to prepare the local environment and community for sustainable economic integration and tourism development.

Strategic Framework & Management Actions

Climate Change Adaptation & Risk Management

Low-Impact Infrastructure & Visitor Management

Cultural Heritage Protection & Authentic Preservation

Safeguarding Intangible Cultural Heritage

Local Access to Training & Capacity Building

Community-Based Tourism (CBT) & Local Economic Benefit

Key Initiatives in Detail

Action One: Climate Adaptation & Risk Management (GSTC D3/A10)

Procured specialized machinery to proactively manage landslide risks and maintain secure transit corridors, ensuring long-term safety for both residents and visitors (donor-financed).

Action Two: Low-Impact Infrastructure (GSTC A4/D1)

Revitalized the natural mineral spring site, Mjave Tskali, transforming it into a sustainable rest stop and regional attraction. The space now accommodates picnic areas and designated zones for local artisans to market their products, fostering community exchange.

Action Three: Cultural Heritage Protection (GSTC C1/C2)

Reconstructed a traditional Svan dwelling, known as a Machub, utilizing authentic local materials and traditional building techniques. By establishing an on-site educational initiative for local youth during construction, we successfully facilitated the intergenerational transfer of vanishing architectural skills.

Action Four: Intangible Heritage – The Festival (GSTC C4)

Revived the regional cultural festival, Lentekhoba, integrating it into the annual calendar to safeguard local folklore, traditional culinary arts, and heritage sports.

Action Five: Local Training & Capacity Building (GSTC B4/B5)

Introduced targeted English language programs for community members, bridging communication gaps and equipping residents for professional opportunities within the tourism sector.

Action Six: Community-Based Tourism (GSTC B1/B2)

Designed inclusive tourism products that actively involve local families as hosts, culinary providers, and craft vendors, ensuring equitable economic distribution throughout the community.

Note: All project phases in Lentekhi were successfully realized through valued donor partnerships.
